Mission Statement

This blog journals my quest of art, whether it is a piece of work that is inherent in nature or one created by artists known or unknown or that I created myself. During this search, I have come to appreciate the magnificence and generosity of God who in his infinite wisdom surrounded us with exquisiteness everyday...everywhere and inspired our human spirit to create beauty that feeds our bodies and souls. Come join me on my journey to find art through my travels and my own creative endeavors. Maraming salamat.

Madonna and Child No. 1 of 2015

Madonna and Child 2015
By jojo sabalvaro tan
Watercolor on paper

A high school friend requested that I give her one of my original Madonna and Child paintings. She said that Mary and Jesus had stood by her through all her trials and tribulations. I promised I would bring her one when I visit the Philippines for the Golden Jubilee anniversary reunion of our high school graduation. Unfortunately, in my frenzied packing, I left the painting as well as other paintings I had promised to other classmates at home. Since I had my sketchbook and paints handy for my watercolor travel journalling, I decided that I would just paint a Madonna and Child especially for her before we meet.

Because she intends to use it as a devotional piece, I decided that I would paint an icon. I feel that icons have proven over several centuries to have the power to invite contemplative prayers for the devotee. Many miracles and answered prayers have been attributed to icons
.
The icon image I chose is a typical Madonna and Child image from the Byzantine period with Eastern Orthodox influences. This is a small image, just 5" x 5.5". It is small enough to be portable just like the icons of old which the devotee brought with them on their travels. I chose the color purple for Mary's gown as tribute to my classmate's birth month (February).

I've included a couple of pictures of my painting. One is the painting in progress and the other is the finished product. I still to have the painting matted before I give to my classmate for her birthday.

Whenever I paint my Madonna and Child images, I use the time to meditate and pray also. This is also the week that Pope Francis is visiting the Philippines. like Saint John Paul II, he is devoted to the Virgin Mary, so I thought that my prayer and thoughts during this painting session should include a request for the safety and success of the Pope in his travels and ministry.

Mary, Help of Those in Need

Holy Mary,

help those in need,

give strength to the weak,
comfort the sorrowful,
pray for God's people,
assist the clergy,
intercede for religious.
Mary all who seek your help
experience your unfailing protection.
Amen.
